Methamphetamine Contamination Queensland Study

Methamphetamine contamination in residential properties and their remediation in Queensland, Australia.

The study sampled 561 swab samples from 47 properties in Queensland suspected of meth use or manufacture and compared pre- and post-remediation levels. Results showed that kitchens and bathrooms tend to have the highest residues on surfaces.

Painted and laminated surfaces often show higher contamination levels compared to more porous or textured surfaces. In properties with very high residue levels or where contamination had penetrated deeper materials, a single clean-up was sometimes insufficient: repeated remediation cycles were needed to bring levels below “safe” thresholds.

The “safe level” guideline in many Australian jurisdictions is 0.5 µg per 100 cm² of surface, but the article notes that this threshold is debated and enforcement varies.
